The gap between what was said and what was understood

A person is told a great deal in fifteen minutes, under stress, sometimes in their second language, and then sent home with a printed sheet. Frankie is a plain language aid for that gap. It is not a clinical system and it never pretends to be one.

Where it helps

On the patient side of the conversation

Discharge instructions, replayed at home

The sheet gets photographed once. At home it can be read aloud again and again, at any text size, with questions allowed.

They askRead me what it says about the wound dressing again, slowly.

A language bridge at the bedside

English and Russian, spoken and written, including sentences that mix the two. A letter written in one can be explained in the other.

They askПрочитай это по-русски, пожалуйста.

The medication schedule that sticks

Reminders go out as a text message or a spoken phone call at the right local time, rather than as a notification nobody reads.

They sayRemind me to take this one twice a day, morning and night.

The bill and the benefits letter

Explanation of benefits documents defeat almost everybody. Frankie reads them and says, in ordinary words, what is owed and what is not.

They askIs this a bill I have to pay, or just a statement?

Questions they did not think of in the room

Frankie helps them write the question down for the next appointment instead of losing it, and remembers it until then.

They sayRemind me to ask the doctor about the dizziness on Thursday.

It knows who is speaking

With voice lock on, only the person who taught Frankie their voice can give it spoken instructions. Useful in a shared room or a ward.

ResultThe television and the visitor do not get to talk to it.

Boundaries

What we will not claim

Health is the area where an assistant most needs to know what it is not, so this is stated up front rather than in a footnote.

  • Not a medical device. No diagnosis, no triage, no clinical decision support, no interpretation of results as advice.
  • It never alters instructions. Frankie reads what the label or the sheet actually says. It will not adjust a dose, and it will not tell anyone to stop taking something.
  • No Business Associate Agreement today. Frankie should not be used as a system of record for protected health information. It fits the patient side, or a clinician using it as a plain language aid without entering identifiable data. If a wider deployment needs a BAA, tell us and we will talk about it honestly rather than sell around it.
  • Emergencies go to emergency services. Frankie says to call 911 and to contact family, and does not attempt to handle it.
  • Consumer health data is treated as sensitive. See the consumer health data section of the privacy notice for exactly what that means, including the state laws it is written against.

Questions

From clinicians and care teams

Is FrankieGPT a medical device?
No. Frankie does not diagnose, does not triage, does not change prescription instructions, and does not make clinical decisions. It explains documents in plain language and helps people communicate. Anything clinical belongs to the clinician.
Is it HIPAA compliant?
Not today. We do not currently offer a Business Associate Agreement, so Frankie should not be used as a system of record for protected health information. Where it fits right now is on the patient side of the conversation: a person using their own account to understand their own paperwork, or a clinician using it as a plain language aid without entering identifiable patient data. If you need a BAA in place for a wider deployment, write to us and tell us what you need.
How does the translation help work?
Frankie speaks English and Russian, including sentences that mix both, and it can read a document in one language and explain it in the other. Voice recognition covers fifteen languages, so it can still tell who is speaking when a conversation switches. More assistant languages are in progress.
Can a patient replay what they were told after they go home?
That is one of the strongest uses. Discharge instructions and appointment notes photographed or forwarded to the account can be read out loud at home, as many times as the person wants, at whatever pace and text size suits them, and they can ask follow up questions about it.
Can a clinic provide accounts to its patients?
Yes. Accounts can be created and funded centrally so a clinic or care team can hand them out. Write to hello@frankiegpt.com and we will work through the setup and the paperwork with you.
